Description of CLEA: The Certified Law Enforcement Auditor (CLEA) certification is intended to signify that its recipient possesses a high level of knowledge, skill, and experience in the general area of auditing and law enforcement as deemed by the Board of Directors of the International Law Enforcement Auditors Association (ILEAA). The recipient has demonstrated that they can apply superior professional audit services (to include accountability, objectivity, independence, professional judgment, and ethical behavior) in all matters related to the field of law enforcement.
Requirements:
1. ILEAA Membership
Be a member in good standing with ILEAA.
2. Other Professional Certifications
Candidate holds at least one related professional certification such as: a Chartered Accountant, a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Internal Auditor, a Certified Government Financial Manager, a Certified Government Auditing Professional, a Certified Fraud Examiner, or other recognized audit related professional certification acceptable to the CLEA candidacy committee and provide evidence of that certification. If you meet item 2: items 4 and 6 are applicable to you.

If you do not meet item 2: items 3 through 6 are applicable to you.
3. Education Requirement
A. Hold a university degree granted from an accredited institution, with a major of study in accounting, auditing, criminal justice, management, economics, finance, marketing, public administration, or other related law enforcement study.

B. Have the equivalent of a university degree, which would be determined by aggregating training hours from sources which could include college courses, military schooling, police academy training, in service training, certified home study, ILEAA or other professional association training such as Law Enforcement Academy attendance.
4. Experience Requirement
A candidate must have at least three years of full-time experience. This experience can be any combination of auditing, consulting, advising, or teaching in the field of audit and/or investigation, elements of which must be directly related to aspects of law enforcement including the detection, prevention, and investigation of fraud, physical security, and risk assessment/risk management.
5. Examination (NOTE: This examination is not currently available so this route to certification is currently not open).
Receive a passing score on the CLEA examination. The passing score on the exam is 75% correct.
6. Continuing Professional Education (CPE)
Credential holders of the Certified Law Enforcement Auditor (CLEA) must agree to obtain 80 hours of Continuous Professional Education (CPE) credits every two years. The CPE credits must be in areas of fraud, communication, risk assessment, risk management, statistical sampling, or other area with a minimum of 20 hours directly related to auditing in each two-year period starting with the calendar year after the year the credential is received.
Summary:
- Members with other professional certifications must meet requirements 1, 2, 4, and 6. No exam required.
- Members without other professional certifications must meet requirements 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
